Bisphenol A from Baby Milk Bottle

In September 1997, Japan Offspring Fund asked to Professor Hanai at the Yokohama National University to test whether or not bisphenol A detected from polycarbonate baby milk bottle. The result of the test was Yes.

We asked to test the six major brands polycarbonate baby milk bottle, from all of them bisphenol A is detected ranged from 3.1 parts per billion to 5.5 parts per billion.

NO

Brand Name (Producer)

Bisphenol A (ppb)

1

Disney Baby KP-240 (pigion)

3.3

2

Nuku Baby Bottle (Kombi)

3.1

3

Bean Stark (Otsuka Pharmacy)

5.5

4

3.9

5

Hello Kitty Babies (Tomy)

4.5

6

Mote Mote Kun (Inoakku)

3.9

7

Snoopy (Pigion made of glasses)

none

In November, we asked to test baby milk bottles sent from Philippine and Malaysia to Dr. Yuji Takao at Nagasaki University whether or not bisphenol A is detected from baby milk bottle. Bisphenol A is detected again.

Country Bisphenol A (ppb)
Malaysia 5.5 ppb
Philippine 3.6 ppb

The amount of bisphenol A detected from baby milk bottle is different from each baby milk bottle. However whether the amount is large or small is not important. Because we don't have agreement how much bisphenol A is safe to human health. A scientist reported that only 2ppb bisphenol A can cause abnormality in rats when fed with food for a week. But some scientists disagree with this result. Actually we don't know how much bisphenol A is safe. But important thing is that bisphenol A is suspected as endocrine disrupting chemicals, and what we should do now is to avoid bisphenol A whenever we can. Especially for fetuses, babies and small children, it is important to avoid bisphenol A, since they are sensitive to EDCs. Fortunately we have alternative of polycarbonate milk bottle, we have glass one. At least if we have alternative, we must choose alternative.
